ABOUT THE TEACHERS:

David Robson is a practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga Yoga, in the tradition of Sharath Yoga Centre (SYC). David is the director of the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto, where he leads one of the world’s largest Mysore programs outside of India.

David began a daily practice in 1998 while at university studying Comparative Religion. After graduating, David made his first trip to Mysore, India in 2002, where he initiated studies with his teacher Sharath Jois. Since then he has returned to Mysore annually to deepen and enrich his practice and teaching.

In 2007, David was Authorized to teach Ashtanga and now holds a level 2 authorization.

David has become well-known on social media for his educational and entertaining yes/no tutorials. Through these videos he's become one of the most recognized and respected Ashtanga Yoga teachers worldwide.

David teaches the morning mysore program at Ashtanga Toronto, and leads workshops and retreats around the world with his wife Jelena.

Jelena Vesić

After four years of doing her PhD (Political Science, York University, Toronto), Jelena decided to walk away and dedicate herself to teaching Ashtanga Yoga full time. She’s been teaching since 2014, and is now leading the evening Mysore program at AYCT. Alongside her husband, David Robson, Jelena teaches workshops and retreats in Toronto and around the world.

Jelena first came to yoga through dance. As a former ballet dancer of 16 years, the structure and rigour of the Ashtanga Yoga practice felt like home. Drawn to the discipline, mindfulness of the movement and emphasis on the breath, Jelena made the Ashtanga practice her sole focus in 2009.

Jelena has maintained a daily Ashtanga practice for over a decade. She’s made many trips to Mysore, India to study with her teacher, Sharath Jois. In addition, Jelena also considers herself to be a student of Jack Kornfield, a Buddhist teacher and clinical psychologist. She’s completed his and Tara Brach’s “The Power of Awareness” course and their two-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program.

Lastly, Jelena’s true passion lies in promoting rescue and adoption of (street) dogs. You can often find her sharing her love for #adoptdontshop on her IG, and sharing the joys of living with her two fur-babies, Goku and Khani, both celebrities in their own right.

Marque Garaux in Amsterdam

  • Bluebirds West (map)

This spring, we are excited to announce the arrival of Marque Garaux, also known as @yogamarque on Instagram, to Amsterdam for the very first time.

Marque, a KPJAYI Level 2 authorized teacher, brings with him profound knowledge and expertise in Ashtanga Yoga.

During this event, Marque will be leading a comprehensive week of Mysore and led Ashtanga practices, accompanied by a captivating weekend filled with enlightening workshops. Together, we will embark on a journey to "crack the code" of Ashtanga Yoga, deepening our understanding and enhancing our practice.

Cracking the Code of Ashtanga Yoga program:

Friday afternoon: CRACKING THE CODE OF THE MIND

This session is aimed to help take the eager aspirants of yoga off of their mats and into a deep group discussion. We will talk about the nature of the mind, our thoughts, perceptions of good and bad, the seen world around us and how it creates the obstacles that keep us in a comfortable state of delusion. The workshop is concluded with a talk on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Saturday afternoon: CRACKING THE CODE OF THE BODY PART 1

Memorizing anatomical terms is sadly not enough to really understand anatomy. Here we will view the body and its sometimes intelligent and sometimes flawed designs. We will learn how to view, discuss, and move the body in ways that will increase both strength and mobility. This workshop will contain strength and mobility drills that students are encouraged to participate in and also film for later use.

Sunday afternoon: CRACKING THE CODE OF THE BODY PART 2

This asana clinic will take the larger concepts from part 1 and will apply them to the asanas and vinyasas of the 1st, 2nd and even 3rd series. In addition to moving our bodies with our own strength we will also explore how and when to assist and to be assisted.

About the teacher:

Marque Garaux, a US Marine Veteran, long time rock climber and overall outdoor enthusiast, discovered Ashtanga Yoga while seeking different ways to alleviate his lower back pain. After noticing an almost immediate physical change, Marque then slowly began to see other positive changes happening in his life as well. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, he found himself with no choice but to get up early and go through it at home each day. During this time Marque also attended a 200 hour teacher training and several Ashtanga workshops and intensives to deepen his understanding of this beautiful system.
In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Marque was accepted and spent the first 2 months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois. Since that first trip, Marque has practiced with Sharath multiple times and is committed to keeping this teacher/student relationship alive and strong. Marque received the blessing as an Authorized Level 2 teacher from Sharath on December 12th, 2017 during his morning practice.
Marque is the owner of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga which is located on eight wooded acres in Geneva, Ohio. He spends about 6 months there per year offering a full Mysore program, private lessons and workshops. The other half of the year is dedicated to his travels where he reconnects with his students around Europe and with his teacher in India.
